Sunday Buffet £8.95
The Chaps decided to delve into a bit of Berkshire on their continued quest for perfection, so off to the XENUK we went!
Set back from the road one would probably miss it during the day, but at night time it offers great kerb appeal with ample parking at the front and back.
I was greeted warmly on entering, but unfortunately this wasn’t extended to the rest of my party as we were seated on a large comfortable table near the window – everyone requires a smile and made to feel welcome on arrival, not just the lead.
It was quite busy for a Monday evening, with a large table to our right celebrating a birthday, which provided a nice buzzy atmosphere for us to get involved with.
Our waiter for the evening was a well spoken Eastern European chap which was a first for us: he was attentive and brought our drinks and doms out fairly quickly.
We shared starters: Duck Tikka and sizzling King Prawns, however the duck was a bit too seared on some sides and the King Prawns mostly consisted of shell.
There was quite a lengthy wait until our main meals came out, and the cynical ones amongst us felt this could be a ploy to get us supping more Kingfisher, however when they arrived they looked good with very large portions.
Unfortunately, a few of the Chaps found them to be of a gloopy consistency; with some of the meat not very well tikka’d and dry in places. Also, as the dishes cooled they took on a bit of an unpleasant overly salty flavour.
The sides and naan were really good though, and we all enjoyed those.
Prior to our dining experience, I’d called XENUK the previous week to see if there were any weekday deals available as none were displayed on their website: the person answering stated “you’ll receive one main meal free of charge when you order two” so we thought “happy days”
When we received the bill however, we had a minor stand off with the Manager as he stated this was in conjunction with some form of taste card or spending £25.00 on an initial visit - something along those lines - but fair enough he credited us one main meal which was decent of him as it was a bit embarrassing for me.
We left feeling a bit underwhelmed and deflated as our experience had started so well, but ultimately were all a bit disappointed with the restaurant.
Oh well: onwards and upwards and the quest continues!!
