Chilli Rating:

When the Chilli phone rang in the Chilli Chaps secret curry command centre I gladly accepted our next mission.

The Tamarind Tree in Wokingham according to the infamous Trip Advisor informs us that we could be in for a good night, but what do those amateurs know anyway? Theres only one way to find out if a curry house is worth trying and thats by attacking it with the Chaps!

Quite a nice tidy and well set out restaurant although the tables are a bit small.

Friendly and attentive service was given to us throughout the meal. We even had the Mayor Of Bracknell hosting a fund raiser which gave the restaurant a lively and busy atmosphere.

Great menu, not only in construction ( I do like a quality menu ) but also in range of dishes.

Starters were first class, there was even a Spinny Susan thing with all the pickles and chutneys which I thought was very good to annoy the Chaps with by continually spinning throughout the meal !

If we would have just had the starters with the poppadoms this restaurant would have scored very well but unfortunately the mains let everyone down.

All our mains were the same, lots of sauce with no real flavour. I ordered the Lamb Achari Ghost and the lamb wasn't very tender either which was a shame as everything else had been so good.

The hand towels were enough to make Susan blush and even the fake ( free of charge ) baileys couldn't save this meal from the low score it eventually received.

Great night as always with the Chaps but the Tamarind Tree will need to make a few improvements if it wants to improve its score.

Chap 4 Review:

So the jolly old Tamarind Tree…  recommended by a customer of mine who stated it was his “favourite in Wokingham..”

First impressions were favourable (although it’s basically an old shop in a parade of shops), and we were offered a choice of seats by our friendly waiter for the evening.

The beer selection is OK: 1 x draught lager (Kingfisher) and a decent variety of others on offer in bottles.

Our Doms arrived promptly and were first class accompanied by an outstanding variety of dips and chutneys on offer: some green coconutty looking stuff Chap 2 referred to as “Hulk Dust” which gave us a good old giggle.

Sharing a starter with Chap 4 and all was looking really good, however it was when our main courses arrived things started to go downhill.

I had a Hatkora Bhuna but we all opted for different dishes, however unfortunately the common factor in all of them was that the sauce was quite watery and insipid, with some of the meat also a touch tough.

The restaurant was really buzzing during the evening as well: a Charity doo being held in there by the Mayor of Bracknell Forest (aka a first class Rolf Harris looky-likey), so I’m not sure if the Kitchen was under a bit of pressure with this, however we were all underwhelmed by our main dishes and left feeling a bit disappointed in all honesty.

A real shame as it had started off so well.

Onwards and upwards anyway and the quest continues.

We had heard some good things about this, so we checked it out.

Set in a parade of shops unfortunately gave it a look of just another shop front but we were able to park easily in front.
The curb appeal was ok but think you will always struggle to make it look any better because of its location.
A warm welcome as we entered and showed a table near the window by Indian Ronaldo. The place seemed very busy, which was a good sign with a charity function taking place as well.
Usual beverages on the list but only kingfisher on draught. Menus were full of great sounding dishes.
Poppadoms came with a good variety of dips and dust's, taking us all by surprise with some we had not come across before (hulk dust).
Myself and chap 1 went for a mixed starter which was full of flavour and built up the experience and made me look forward for what was to come.

I ordered a Kofta Bhuna but when the mains came I was disappointed to be delivered a different dish. This was quickly rectified and while I waited I dug into the rest of the chaps mains. I felt these were all very similar in consistency with a very watered feel about them and a lack of flavour. My main arrived and had the same trade mark sloppy dish to it.

After the great start with some great poppadoms and starters I felt let down by the mains.
Unfortunately for me, I would not revisit as it lacked the main part of the experience of going for an Indian meal for me.

So onto the Tamarind Tree and the evening started well with a good looking restaurant from the outside and a warm welcome upon entering. The chaps were excited to see the local Mayor there hosting a charity event, although this became rather tedious with speeches and raffle tickets being sold through the evening interupting the serious business of us reviewing the restaurants service and food.

Anyway, onto the food which started extremely promising with a lovely array of pickles and sauces to accompany our delicious poppadoms. The starters then carried on in the same vein being very tasty and presented well. The chaps were looking forward to the arrival of our mains with anticipation based on the quality of what had already been served... but this is where things took a turn for the worse.

My main dish of Chicken Jalali was bland and very watery. It lacked any real flavour or substance and was a great disappointment after such a wonderful start to our visit.

It is possible that our dishes were comprimised by the Mayors large table having ordered at around the same time, but this should never have affected the quality of dishes served to the other diners in the restaurant.

In summary, the restaurant was clean and pleasant with good service. The complimentary drink at the end of our meal was a nice touch, but what looked like being high quality food was let down by the underwhelming main courses, such a shame as it it was on course for being one of the top scorers.
